After an international tour being on display in Paramaribo, Suriname and Paris, France, the Natural Hairstyles exhibition BAD Hair Uprooted is back in New York. From August 6 to August 15 all hair types are invited to visit the Green Space NYC  Civic Art Lab in Bedstuy to celebrate Black follicles highlighting the social injustice of unequal hair rights.

Black people are the only people on planet earth who don't have the fundamental human right to wear their God-given tresses natural, says Photographer Drs. Mireille Liong-A-Kong.

Fact is that the pictured hairdos from Afros to Dreadlocks, from Twists to Cornrows, all perfectly natural for African strands, are still stereotyped and considered fads unfit for the workplace. This has devastating consequences for Black follicles. An overwhelming 73% of African American women are suffering from relaxer-induced alopecia, hair loss related to chemical straighteners.

Liong, a Suriname native, has been shooting for justice aiming to change the perception of natural hair, one shot at the time, for over a decade.

Her personal struggle with relaxer induced hair loss inspired the University of Amsterdam graduate to use her IT expertise for social change. Known as the first woman in Holland to build a website, she created going-natural.com, the first social web and networking site for natural hair.

Liong's striking images of natural hairstyles are featured on websites, in magazines and billboards.

The exhibition opens on Thursday August 6 at 7:00 with a talk from the photographer and the release of the photo book, BAD Hair Uprooted, A Celebration of Black Follicles. Copies of the book can be preordered at.
