After an international tour being on display in Paramaribo, Suriname and Paris, France, the Natural Hairstyles exhibition BAD Hair Uprooted is back in New York. From August 6 to August 15 all hair types are invited to visit the Green Space NYC Civic Art Lab in Bedstuy to celebrate Black follicles highlighting the social injustice of unequal hair rights.
Putting together an exhibition is a lot of work but it doesn't take away from the excitement of going to Paris, to Boucles d'Ebene. Not only am I super exited to have my work on display in the city of lights, "Je 'taime Paris" and it will be great to see Aline Tacite, the wonderful powerful woman behind this huge expo, again.
BAD Hair Uprooted, the exhibition that pictures Natural Hairstyles from New York will be on display at Boucles d'Ebene at the Au Centquatre-Paris convention center from May 30th to June 1st in Paris, France.
After a roll call by African Voices Magazine for artists to submit their work for an exhibition to commemorate the legendary Gordon Parks, I decided to try my luck. The hardest part is always making a selection and we could only submit two pieces but after I sent out the work, I almost forgot about it until I received a reply.
Although I started shooting in 2003 and had already captured hundreds of natural hairstyles, an exhibition never really crossed my mind until my friend who Peta saw the portraits, planned the seed. A few months after Lawrence Rodriguez actually offered me the opportunity to have an exhibition at his Manhattan gallery Casa Frela after he viewed my work.
